Backpacking is a form of low-cost, independent travel, backpacker tourism is generally a form of youth travel primarily undertaken by young people.
New Zealand has reciprocal arrangements with approximately 25 countries and these young backpackers are allowed to stay in New Zealand for 3 months.
During this period they will travel, visiting places in New Zealand and they also can work (small jobs) if they need to supplement their pocket.
The average stay for a backpacker is mostly 2-3 days in Auckland, however some do stay for weeks.
The backpacker segment, aged between 18- 24 years, represents approximately 11 percent of New Zealand’s holiday arrivals and visitor spend – making it a valuable visitor segment for New Zealand.
