The County Hotel is arguably Napier’s most iconic and well-known boutique 5-star accommodation providers and eateries, comprising 18 beautiful appointed and spacious guest rooms and one of the city’s most popular restaurants offering some of the best outdoor alfresco dining options in the city together with charismatic Churchill Bar & Basement Cellar, offering a wonderful space for events and functions.
Originally constructed in 1908/9 for the Hawke’s Bay Municipal Offices, this building is the only remaining example of a Victorian-Edwardian classical style architecture in Napier, surviving the 1931 Napier earthquake that impacted most of the buildings of that era.
This three-story building remained the location of the Hawke’s Bay County Council for almost 80 years until it was comprehensively restored and repurposed into its current use as a hotel in 1993.
The current owners purchased the property in 2002 and then undertook a significant refurbishment/expansion of the Hotel, making this one of the first Qualmark rated 5-star boutique lodging facilities in New Zealand and the only five star rated hotel between Auckland and Wellington outside of the CBD at the time.
It is situated in the heart of the city’s Art Deco quarter at the northern end of the Napier CBD and features original Edwardian Gothic features along with Art Deco influences that have been preserved including high ceilings, wood paneling, and intricate detailing
